Tools Needed for Take Apart:

Philips head screwdriver (size #00, available from Topalways.com)Flat pry tool (such as a black nylon tool available from our store)

Introduction:

The picture above shows two models of the iPod Video. There are black andwhite models and the later revision had a thinner back case. The insides are almostidentical so we will only be covering the white one pictured above. There are 30GBand 60GB hard drive sizes for the iPod Video. The hard drives connect the same way,so there is nothing different between hard drives.

OpeningtheCase:

The metal bottom casing is very easy to scratch, so I recommend covering the areawith tape so you won't damage the case if your tool slips. You should be able to seethe tape in the picture above to the left of the iPod's LCD screen. This is the best placeto begin opening the case.

Get your tool in between the front plastic casing and the back metal casing. Thethinner the tool the better you will be. Thin flathead screwdrivers and small puttyknives tend to work best. You may need to use a lot of pressure to make sure the tooldoesn't slip.

Work the tool down the side until it pops out like the picture above. Once it is at thisstage just continue gently prying it open until you can fold the top case away from theback casing.

Once it is separable, you should be able to rotate the back casing around 90 degreesand be able to lay both flat like in the image above. Contragulations, you are nowinside your iPod.

RemovingtheHardDrive:

Use a flathead screwdriver and gently lift the clip around the battery ribbon cable tounlock it. Once the clip is lifted, you can easily pull out the ribbon cabledisconnecting it from the logic board.

You can then flip the hard drive straight back towards the docking port. This willreveal the rest of the ribbon cables and the logic board.

The picture above shows the ribbon cable from the hard drive to the logic board. Therest of the cables in the iPod uses this clip mechanism or a similar style. You need toflip up the brown clip to unlock the cable and then you can pull the cable out. If youare replacing the hard drive, you will also need to remove the ribbon cable from thehard drive. This is done in a similar fashion. Flip up the plastic clip (black in color inthe image above) and pull the ribbon cable out.

ReplacingtheLogicBoard:

(previous steps required: Opening the Case, Removing the Hard Drive)

Disconnect the headphone module ribbon cable by flipping up the clip (brown in theimage above) and pulling out the ribbon cable.

You should now have three separate pieces. The back case, the main body, and thehard drive.

The cable (blue in the picture above) can be removed the same way as the others. Flipup the clip (black in this case) and slide the cable out.

We now need to separate the front casing. There are a total of 6 philips head screwson both sides of the frame. (3 on each side) You can then pull the front case awayfrom the frame, logic board, and LCD. There can be some adhesive so it may take alittle more force. The click button from the click wheel may fall out at this point somake sure you are performing the repair where it won't be lost.The front case should now be removed and you can now see the click wheelmechanism and the front side of the LCD and logic board. The click wheel has a littlepiece glued to the frame, you should be able to peel this off with no problem. Youshould now be able to push the logic board from the back and get it separated fromthe frame. The logic board does have some adhesive so it may take some more forceto get it separated.

Once the logic board is separated from the frame, you can remove the click wheelribbon cable from the logic board by flipping up the lock mechanism and pulling thecable out.

ReplacingtheLCD:

(previous steps required: Opening the Case, Removing the Hard Drive, Removing the Front Case)

With the Front Case separated, the LCD should just come out easily. There may besome tape connecting the LCD to the frame/logic board. You can just peel the tapeoff.

ReplacingtheHeadphoneModule/Back Case:

(previous steps required: Opening the Case, Removing the Hard Drive)

You should have the back case and the hard drive separated from the logic board asshown in the picture above before starting this section.

Use a flathead screwdriver and pry up underneath the battery. It is only held downwith adhesive and should pop out. Make sure not to damage the ribbon cables.

There will be five screws holding the headphone module in place. There are two onthe headphone jack side and three near the hold button. Once those are out themodule can be removed and the back case should be empty.

PuttingitBack Together:

The hardest part about putting it back together is lining up the click wheel.

If you look at the picture above, you can see the click wheel mechanism has four tabsaround it. The front case has four matching grooves. Make sure those fit snug or theclick wheel will be loose and possibly unresponsive. The select button also needs toline up with the grooves so it can sit comfortably. The best way to do this is to lay thefront case down like in the picture and tilt the main body until you can get it to fit andthen continue to tilt the logic board over until it lays on top of the front case. Makesure you have the LCD in the frame before laying it on top of the front case.

This is how it should look after flipping it over all the way.

The rest is just putting the screws back in, connect the LCD, the headphone ribboncable, the hard drive, and then the battery in reverse order of taking it apart. Once allthat is connected, just take the back case, make sure it is right side up and snap it backto the top, and you are done.
